How to save money as a freelancer
For my entire freelancing career, I have been horrible at saving money. Without a regular paycheck, it’s very hard to get yourself into a routine, and I ended up never saving a dime.
But this year, I figured out a way that has been working great for me. I turned it into a game.
You know that arcade game where you hit the button to stop a light between two lines, then win a prize? Well, in this game I have to keep my checking account balance between two lines. The minimum I have to keep in my account to avoid international ATM fees is $2000. So that’s line #1. I decided the maximum I wanted on hand for spending at any given time is $3000. Line #2.
If I go over 3000, I transfer the extra money into my savings, which helps me set money aside for the future. But if I get to close to $2000, that means I either have to earn some more money or start spending less. And that keeps me within my means.
It’s worked out pretty great for me so far. (your high and low numbers may vary)
